Biography
Born December 17, 1944, and raised in St. Louis, MO, Joy attended Washington University School of Fine Arts in St. Louis. She pursued professions in fashion and later ran her fund-raising business, Joy of Youth. In the late 1980s opportunity and spirit were right for Joy to return to art. A 1990 sculpture class reawakened her love for modeling clay into the human form. With encouragement from her husband Brian, Joy began the process of becoming a fine artist through formal education, job experience and interpersonal relationships.
Joy models clay or wax into the desired form and then has a mold made. In order to preserve her intricate surfaces, Joy personally chases every wax. She hires the best in the United States to produce her work, oversees the final metal finishing, and checks every piece for the high quality that meets her standards.
Joy created fourteen bronze bas-relief portraits for the National Cosmetology Association Hall of Fame from 1993 through 1998.
From fall 1995 through 1998 Joy evolved into a full-time sculptor. In 1995, Joy followed her heart and created “Dreaming of Tomatoes” not only because of her love for her aging dachshund, Anna, but because of her love of the line from Anna’s elbow to the ribcage, to the belly, and then the hip. “Dreaming” was her second sculpture of her first dachshund. People responded lovingly to her newfound subjects, and so did the art community. She had stumbled upon a niche!
The National Sculpture Society elected Joy to Professional Sculptor Membership in 2006, while the Society of Animal Artists elected Joy to Signature membership in spring 1999. In 2000, she accepted an invitation to become a Master Signature Member of American Women Artists and she has since accepted full memberships in Allied Artists of America, Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, Artists for Conservation, and Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers Society of Washington, DC.
Joy’s series of dachshunds, have earned her national recognition and over 50 awards. To date, she has exhibited in seven National Sculpture Society (NSS) shows: five Annuals, as well as “Everyday Life” and “Portraits, Public and Private”. She’s earned four NSS awards, including the National Sculpture Society Silver Medal. Other major awards include the Ellin P. Speyer Prize from the National Academy; four Best of Shows; and from the Society of Animal Artists, two Awards of Excellence, the Leonard J. Meiselman Award, and the Elliot Siskin Award.
As of 2007, Joy’s collectors live on six continents! Her work has been acquired for the permanent collections of the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog, St. Louis, MO; two pieces at The Library of Hattiesburg, Hattiesburg, MS; and three pieces grace the Dunnegan Gallery of Art in Bolivar, MO. Her collectors range from those who love Chihuahuas to Great Danes. She thanks her many teachers including, for figure structure, Barry Schactman; and for sculpture, H. Richard Duhme, Jaye Gregory, Hank Knickmeyer, Rudi Torrini, Tuck Langland, and Eugene Daub. She is grateful for the many years of friendship of her dear, departed dachshund anatomy mentor, Judge Weldon B Long, without whose early coaching she could not have created her winning works with accuracy so close to the American Kennel Club standard. Thank you!

Born December 17, 1944, and raised in St. Louis, MO, Joy attended Washington
University School of Fine Arts in St. Louis. She pursued professions in
fashion at Famous-Barr and later ran her fund-raising business, Joy of
Youth. In the late 1980's opportunity and spirit were right for Joy to
return to art. A 1990 sculpture class reawakened her love for modeling clay
into the human form. With encouragement from her husband, Brian, Joy began
the process of becoming a fine artist through formal education, job
experience and interpersonal relationships.
Joy is a modeler. She models clay or wax into the desired form rather than
carving, for example, a block of marble. When the clay is finished, she has
a mold made and the piece is cast into bronze using the lost-wax method.
Please read her brief overview, "Clay to Bronze," for a better understanding
of the process.
Joy created fourteen bas-relief portraits in bronze for the National
Cosmetology Association Hall of Fame from 1993 through 1998.
From fall 1995 through 1998 she evolved into a full-time sculptor. The
Society of Animal Artists elected her to membership in spring 1999 and she
accepted invitations to become a full member of AWA, the American Women
Artists, based in Santa Fe, NM; Allied Artists of America and the Catharine
Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, both based in New York City.
Joy's series of life-sized dachshunds, inspired by her own "kids," have
earned her national recognition and over 50 awards including the National
Sculpture Society Silver Medal, the Ellin P. Speyer Prize from the National
Academy, four awards from the Society of Animal Artists, and four
Best-in-Shows! Her goal is to create at least one major piece per year. A
Certificate of Authenticity is provided with each life-sized bronze and with
the 1:6 scale series, Dream Chasers. These works are editions of 20. Most
individual 1:6 scale bronzes became editions of 99 & 9 Artist¹s Proofs in
November 1999. Joy taught her first canine sculpture class, sculpted her
first canine commission and her first Golden Retriever in 2001.
Joy's work is in collections around the world, including the permanent
collections of the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog, in St. Louis, MO;
The Library of Hattiesburg, Petal & Forrest County, Hattiesburg, MS; and two
pieces grace the Ella Carothers Dunnegan Gallery of Art, in Bolivar, MO. Her
collectors range from those who love Chihuahuas to Great Danes. She is
grateful for the friendship of her dachshund anatomy mentor, Judge Weldon
Long, without whose coaching she could not have created her winning works
with accuracy so close to the AKC standard.

Artist Statement
Joy Kroeger Beckner is inspired by sensuous shapes of skin, bone and muscle. She models clay into classical forms, which are then cast into bronze. She is thrilled to make something move in-the-round bringing smiles, giggles or tears to the eyes of those who see and touch her work. She first showed in a national competition in 1996. She has earned awards at the National Academy Museum, the National Sculpture Society and the Society of Animal Artists. Her bronze dachshunds have earned numerous awards, including four Best-in-Shows. Art Show at the Dog Show sponsors purchased one for the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog. Joy attended Washington University School of Fine Arts in her hometown, St. Louis, MO.

Commissions
 |
I have the good fortune of doing what I love, my dachshunds, and persons respond lovingly to them. In the last five years of showing my dachshund
bronzes internationally, I learned that I couldn't be everything to everyone. Occasionally a person comes along who wants a very special piece. That's the kind of commission I do. I consider commissions under the
following guidelines.
The subject must excite me and I must visit with it. What thrills me is to
make something move in-the-round... to bring smiles, giggles or tears to the
eyes of those who see and touch my work. I cannot do that if I'm working
from photos of a subject I do not know. If the subject has passed away, I
will consider doing a bas-relief.
The client and I must communicate well. In order to make a strong work of
art, I retain the rights to determine the composition and to artistic
license in all aspects of the design. Once we agree, a letter of
understanding to work together is co-signed and a deposit of one-third the
total will allow me to start your special sculpture.
Based on our letter of understanding, and on measurements and photos taken
during the visit, I create two quick clay sketches, from which the client
selects a favorite. When the clay is finished and approved from sight or
photographs another one third is due. The balance is due upon delivery.
Travel expenses to meet and work from the subject, progress photography, and
any sales tax are paid by the client. The client also pays shipping, F.O.B.

Because of the time required for making your initial sculpture and the cost
of the mold for your sculpture, I review the project for the possibility of
making an edition of the piece, which may reduce your quoted costs. I retain
the right to determine if an edition is feasible and what size the edition
will be. A rare breed of dog and most humans shall be considered
one-of-a-kind sculptures. Commissions require at least nine to twelve months
to create.
I look forward to helping you realize your favorite subject in bronze. All
the best to you! |
